Rotary Is
it a watch, a mower, or a clothes line? Have you ever noticed those little plaques, usually at the entrance to some licensed premises that state:
Have you ever wondered who or what is this mysterious entity, the only clue to their existence being that they meet on licensed premises? Well, there are two such “mysterious entities” in the local area. The Rotary Club of Newton & District Jubilee meets on Tuesday evenings, 7.30pm for 8.00pm, at Birchwood Golf Club. The Rotary Club of Irlam meets on Thursday evenings, 6.45pm for 7.00pm at the Rhinewood Hotel. What
are they? What
is Rotary? What
are we? Rotary was founded in 1905 by a Chicago lawyer named Paul Harris. His aim was, through fellowship with other businessmen, to foster the highest ethical standards in business and professional life. From those small beginnings has grown the greatest organisation of its kind in the world. There are some 1.2 million Rotarians across the Globe in some 40,000 clubs. The Rotary motto is: - “Service above Self” Through fellowship with other Rotarians, and using the skills of our occupations, we try to serve those less fortunate than ourselves. We promote international understanding, goodwill and peace through our worldwide fellowship, and by exchange visits with other countries, particularly sponsoring teams of young people. Through the efforts of our various committees we raise money for local and international projects. Rotary International has been the major International Organisation engaged in the global fight to eradicate Polio from the face of the Earth. It is hoped to achieve this by 2005, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Rotary. We help locally, nationally, internationally, wherever help is needed. Newton Jubilee Club has supported, for example, the disaster relief in Nicaragua, Turkey, and Mozambique. They have sponsored the provision of water supplies to Boroda in India, aid to Albania. More locally, both clubs have organised a Christmas Float collection with a “sleigh” and “Father Christmas”. Irlam Club delivers Christmas parcels to overseas charities. They support St.Anne’s Hospice. Both clubs support local Scouts and Guides. Under-privileged children and children with special needs are supported by both clubs. Newton Jubilee works with local schools promoting “Youth Speaks”, a “Technology Prize”, and “Mock Interviews”. They help funding of projects at Special Schools for children with a variety of difficulties. With these
activities, and many, many more, both your local Rotary Clubs
play their part within the worldwide fellowship of Rotary to
bring help to wherever it is needed and to whoever needs it. Want
