SCOUTING IN CULCHETH &
GLAZEBURY
Helping
young people make the most of life
UK Scouting has over
500,000 members out of 25 million in 200 countries worldwide.
In only six countries in the world is Scouting not permitted.
Scouting has existed in Culcheth & Glazebury almost since
Scouting began in 1907. Of
the present groups in Culcheth, the 3rd Warrington East (1st
Culcheth) Scout Group based in Jackson Avenue celebrated its 50th
anniversary in 1999, whilst the 19th Warrington East
(Culcheth Methodist) started in 1965. The 20th Warrington East (Glazebury) was
registered in Warrington District in 1974 having moved from Leigh
District as part of the boundary changes of that year.
In Culcheth &
Glazebury today there are over 300 members, more than ever before in the
history of Scouting. Beaver
Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, & Venture Scouts sections are active in
the Culcheth groups but Glazebury only has Beaver & Cub sections at
present. Scouting is
co-educational and most sections admit both girls & boys.
Today’s Scouts have greater opportunities than ever before with
the outdoor pursuits of camping, climbing, hiking, sailing, canoeing,
dragon boating, regular activities on the programme.
Opportunities to
travel overseas are numerous, and with a strong link with Sweden for
23 years, hundreds of Culcheth & Glazebury Scouts have travelled to Sweden
for camps on eight exchange visits during that time. In the last few
years Culcheth & Glazebury have been represented at World Jamborees
& International Camps in Australia, South Korea, USA, Holland,
Poland, Sweden, Estonia, & Chile.
Scouts are already planning to participate in the 20th
World Jamboree in Thailand in 2002.
Scouting in the UK is
undergoing some changes in its programme during the next year and at
present there is a consultation on uniform, that will see some radical
changes during 2001.
However, the
fundamentals of the Movement, started by accident by Robert
Baden-Powell in 1907, remain the same.
The
Aim, Principles & Method of The Scout Association is to contribute
to the development of young people in achieving their full physical,
intellectual, social & spiritual potentials, as individuals, as
responsible citizens and as members of their local, national &
international communities.
In
order to continue to provide a first class programme, scouting needs
increasing numbers of leaders, helpers & administrators.
